Diplomatic Incident: Afghan Consul General Controversy in Peshawar

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A diplomatic row has erupted after Afghan Consul General Muhibullah Shakir failed to stand respectfully during Pakistan’s national anthem at the National Mercy Conference.

According to eyewitnesses, all participants stood up as the anthem began, but Consul General Shakir and his colleagues remained seated, causing outrage and embarrassment.

Official sources condemned the incident and said that Shakir’s actions violated diplomatic protocol. Diplomatic staff are bound to follow the host country’s laws and customs, including showing respect during the national anthem, a source said.

The incident could further strain relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which have already been strained since the Taliban took over in August 2021. The international community is divided over whether to recognize the new government.

“We expect diplomats to uphold the highest standards of respect and protocol,” said a Pakistani foreign ministry spokesperson. The incident will be taken up with the Afghan government.

Lawmakers and diplomats are calling for an investigation into the incident to prevent future violations of diplomatic etiquette.
