Hunza: In a significant move to boost trade and tourism between Pakistan and China, the Khunjerab Pass will now remain open throughout the year. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the border crossing will remain operational even during the winter months.
Previously, under a 1985 agreement between Pakistan and China, the Khunjerab Pass was closed from November to April due to heavy snowfall and treacherous road conditions. However, both countries have now mutually agreed to keep the border open year-round.
This decision is expected to increase trade between the two countries and provide tourists with year-round access to the scenic region. It is also anticipated to boost the economy of Gilgit-Baltistan.
