ISLAMABAD, Zubair kasuri, In a move aimed at fostering a welcoming environment for foreign nationals, the Government of Pakistan has unveiled a new policy that simplifies the visa process for newborn children of diplomats and foreigners residing in the country. The decision, which was approved by the Cabinet on 6th January 2025, eliminates overstay charges and streamlines the procedures for obtaining visas for newborns.
Deputy Secretary (Visa) Shireen Hina, who spearheaded this initiative, highlighted the challenges faced by diplomats and foreigners when navigating the visa process for their newborns. The new policy directly addresses these concerns, ensuring a smoother and more efficient experience for foreign nationals.
Under the new guidelines, parents can apply for a visa extension or a new visa for their newborn child in the same category as their own. The visa will be granted upon receipt of the child’s fresh passport, without incurring any overstay charges. Additionally, if an Exit Permit is required for the newborn on an Emergency/Temporary Travel Document or a fresh passport, it will be granted without overstay charges.
The Ministry of Interior has been proactive in disseminating this new policy to all relevant stakeholders, including various ministries, directorates, and officials. NADRA has been directed to update the Pakistan Online Visa System (POVS) to reflect the new guidelines.
