IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians Secure Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford in Smart Pre-Auction Trades

Mumbai Indians have taken a strong early position ahead of the IPL 2026 auction with the confirmed trades of Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur and West Indies hitter Sherfane Rutherford. The IPL officially announced both moves on 13 November 2025, giving MI a solid head start before the retention deadline.

Shardul Thakur joins Mumbai Indians from the Lucknow Super Giants on the same fee LSG paid for him last season: INR 2 crore. He was brought in by LSG as an injury replacement and delivered an impressive 13 wickets in 10 matches during IPL 2025. For MI, this deal is more than just a simple trade. Adding an Indian all-rounder of Thakur’s experience strengthens their domestic core and gives them a player who can contribute with both the ball and crucial lower-order runs. It also shows MI’s intent to build their Indian lineup early instead of relying completely on the auction.

Sherfane Rutherford arrives from the Gujarat Titans for approximately INR 2.6 crore, the same value GT acquired him for. Rutherford brings power-hitting, finishing strength, and international exposure with 44 T20Is under his belt. He also holds a share in the record for the highest sixth-wicket stand in T20Is, alongside Andre Russell. His addition increases MI’s overseas depth, especially in the lower middle order, where explosive finishing often decides matches.

These early trades are important for Mumbai Indians. With the retention deadline close, MI have chosen to lock in key pieces of their squad before the auction. Thakur boosts their Indian all-round options, while Rutherford adds heavy hitting from the overseas list. Together, the two trades help MI balance domestic strength and international firepower well before other teams finalize their lists.

For LSG and GT, releasing these players opens overseas slots and frees up budget space for new signings. These adjustments may influence their retention or release decisions as the deadline approaches.

Overall, Mumbai Indians have played their cards wisely ahead of IPL 2026. Securing Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford early signals a clear strategy: reinforce the squad, improve balance, and enter the auction with flexibility. The next big question is how MI shape their final retention list and how these additions will influence their auction tactics.
