Some conversations and Artifacts shared through Anthropic’s Claude AI were recently found appearing in Google Search results, raising privacy concerns among users. Many people were worried that private chats had been leaked, but there is no evidence that Claude’s private accounts or conversations were hacked.
Instead, the issue involved conversations that users had intentionally shared using Claude’s public sharing feature. Once these links became publicly available on the internet, some of them were indexed by Google and appeared in search results.
How the Issue Was Discovered
The problem first came to light on Saturday, when a Reddit user noticed that searching “site:claude.ai/share” on Google showed many shared Claude conversations.
This search displayed public conversation links that anyone could open without logging into Claude.
It is still unknown how many shared conversations appeared in search results, but the incident quickly raised concerns about user privacy.
Private Accounts Were Not Hacked
Anthropic clarified that private Claude conversations remained secure.
The company said there was no security breach and no unauthorized access to users’ accounts.
Only conversations that users had already chosen to share publicly through Claude’s sharing feature were affected.
This means the problem was not caused by hackers breaking into Claude. Instead, it was related to how public sharing links could become searchable on the internet.
Sensitive Information Was Found
Although the conversations were shared publicly, some contained highly sensitive personal and business information.
Reports claimed that searchable Claude conversations included:
- Medical reports of real patients
- Clinical trial documents with patient names
- Internal company documents
- Employee performance reviews
- Documents containing the names and phone numbers of school children
- Business notes and work files
- Software code and development projects
These findings increased concerns that some users may not have fully understood how public sharing works.
Claude Artifacts Were Also Searchable
The issue was not limited to conversations.
Some Claude Artifacts also appeared in Google Search.
Artifacts are documents and projects users create inside Claude. They can include:
- Interactive documents
- Dashboards
- Web applications
- Code projects
- Business reports
- Notes and presentations
According to reports, several Artifacts containing work-related information were also publicly accessible through Google.
How Claude’s Sharing Feature Works
By default, every Claude conversation is private.
However, users can choose to create a public sharing link if they want to share a conversation or Artifact with someone else.
Claude informs users that anyone with the link can view the content.
Many users believed this worked like an “unlisted” link, meaning only people who received the link would be able to open it.
However, if that public link is posted on a website, forum, social media platform, or anywhere else that search engines can access, Google may discover and index it.
Once indexed, the conversation can appear in search results and become much easier for strangers to find.
Anthropic Explains What Happened
Anthropic said it did not provide Google with a list of shared conversations.
According to the company, every shared Claude link is generated randomly and cannot normally be discovered.
The company explained that search engines only find these links if users publish them somewhere that is publicly accessible.
Anthropic spokesperson Amie Rotherham said that once users create a public sharing link, the content becomes public and may be indexed or archived by search engines like any other public webpage.
Google Responds
Google also responded to the reports.
The company said search engines do not decide which pages should be public.
Instead, website owners control whether pages can be indexed using special website settings.
Google spokesperson Ned Adriance explained that Google respects those instructions when crawling websites.
This means Google was simply indexing pages that were already publicly accessible.
Search Results Have Been Removed
By Monday, many of the shared Claude conversations had disappeared from Google Search.
Technology websites reported they could no longer reproduce the earlier search results.
It is not yet clear whether Anthropic, Google, or both companies made changes to stop these pages from appearing in search results.
However, removing pages from Google Search does not automatically make the shared links private.
If someone already has the public link, they may still be able to access the conversation until the owner disables sharing.
Report of Explicit Content
Another report claimed that one publicly shared Claude conversation contained adult content.
According to the report, the conversation was labeled as being shared through Anthropic.
Since Claude’s policies do not allow sexually explicit content, it remains unclear how the conversation was created or whether someone used special prompts to bypass the AI’s safety rules.
Anthropic had not provided a detailed explanation about that specific case at the time of the report.
Similar Incidents Happened Before
This is not the first time AI conversations have appeared in search engines.
Last year, around 600 publicly shared Claude conversations were reportedly indexed before they were later removed.
A similar situation also happened with ChatGPT in 2025, when researchers collected around 100,000 publicly shared ChatGPT conversations from the internet.
These incidents show that sharing AI conversations publicly can create privacy risks if users include sensitive information.
How to Check Your Shared Claude Chats
Claude users can easily review the conversations they have shared publicly.
To check them:
Settings → Privacy → Shared Chats
This section shows every conversation or Artifact that has a public sharing link.
If users no longer want others to access a shared conversation, they can disable or remove the public link.
What Users Should Do
Anyone who has shared sensitive information through a public Claude link should review their shared chats immediately.
If a conversation contains important information such as passwords, API keys, banking details, login credentials, or confidential business data, users should not only remove the public link but also replace or change those credentials to protect their accounts.
Overall, the incident serves as a reminder that while Claude conversations are private by default, creating a public sharing link makes the content accessible to anyone who has the link.
