Pakistan’s Online Visa System Sees Overwhelming Success, Granting 142,000 Visas in Six Months, According to a Report

Islamabad, Zubair kasuri, Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior has declared its newly launched online visa system, Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA), a resounding success, dramatically streamlining the process for tourists, business professionals, and Sikh pilgrims seeking to visit the country. Since its inception on August 14, 2024, the VPA system has processed a significant volume of applications, demonstrating its efficiency and accessibility.

According to a report released by the Ministry, the VPA platform has received a total of 177,975 applications as of February 22, 2025. Of these, an impressive 142,301 visas have been successfully granted, highlighting the system’s effectiveness. While a substantial majority of applications were approved, 34,441 were rejected or canceled, indicating the system’s adherence to stringent screening protocols.
The VPA system, designed to simplify and expedite visa applications, caters to citizens of 120 eligible countries. It offers a user-friendly online platform with minimal documentation requirements, demanding only a passport and photographs from applicants. Notably, the system operates without any visa fees, further enhancing its appeal. The promise of a 24-hour visa processing time has proven to be a key factor in its popularity.
Data reveals the top 10 countries contributing to the VPA application volume:
* United Kingdom
* United States
* Iran
* China
* Canada
* Germany
* Bangladesh
* Australia
* Malaysia
* Norway
The Ministry of Interior emphasized that the VPA system has not only facilitated travel to Pakistan but has also significantly bolstered national security. By implementing a digital application process, the system has made it considerably more difficult for individuals with fraudulent documents to gain entry.
Recognition of Leadership:
The Ministry also expressed profound appreciation for the leadership of the Secretary Interior, whose vision and dedication were instrumental in the successful implementation of the VPA system. “The Secretary’s unwavering commitment to modernization and efficiency has been pivotal in achieving this milestone,” a Ministry spokesperson stated. “Their strategic guidance has enabled us to create a system that is both user-friendly and secure, significantly enhancing Pakistan’s accessibility to the world.”
The Ministry is committed to continuous improvement of the VPA system and is actively working on future enhancements. A key development will be the integration of the VPA with the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS). This integration will enable the capture of biometric data at all entry and exit points, further strengthening border security and enhancing the accuracy of traveler identification.
Furthermore, recognizing the growing reliance on mobile technology, the Ministry is developing a dedicated smartphone application for the VPA system. This app will allow applicants to initiate and complete their visa applications directly from their mobile devices, offering unparalleled convenience.
The Ministry of Interior, the government body responsible for immigration, passports, visas, and related matters, is dedicated to ensuring the VPA system remains user-friendly, secure, and responsive to the evolving needs of visitors to Pakistan. The success of the VPA system underscores Pakistan’s commitment to promoting tourism, fostering business relationships, and facilitating religious pilgrimages while maintaining robust security measures.
