Samsung Introduces New 200MP ISOCELL HPC Camera Sensor

Samsung has introduced its latest smartphone camera sensor, called the ISOCELL HPC. The new sensor is designed to improve smartphone photography, especially in low-light situations, HDR photography, zoom, and video recording.

Samsung says the ISOCELL HPC is the company’s first image sensor to combine its new DeepPix technology with 16-bit RAW output. The company claims this technology can capture more light and provide a wider dynamic range than the previous generation.

This means smartphones using the new sensor could produce brighter photos, better details in dark areas, and more balanced images when a scene contains both very bright and very dark areas.

200MP Camera Sensor

The ISOCELL HPC is a 200MP sensor with a 1/1.3-inch optical format and 0.6-micron pixels.

The high resolution allows the sensor to capture a large amount of image information. This can also help smartphones provide better digital zoom by cropping into the original image while keeping more detail.

However, the biggest improvement in the new sensor is not just its 200MP resolution. Samsung has focused heavily on improving how much light the sensor can capture and how it handles difficult lighting conditions.

New DeepPix Technology

Samsung’s new DeepPix technology is one of the main features of the ISOCELL HPC.

The technology is designed to allow individual pixels to handle more light before becoming overexposed. This can help the camera preserve more details in bright parts of a photo while also keeping information in darker areas.

For example, when taking a picture of a building against a bright sky, a camera can sometimes make the sky too bright or leave the building too dark. Samsung says DeepPix can help reduce this problem by improving the sensor’s dynamic range.

As a result, photos could have better highlights, more visible shadow details, and a more natural overall look.

16-bit HDR Support

The ISOCELL HPC also supports 16-bit HDR, which is designed to improve image quality in challenging lighting conditions.

HDR, or High Dynamic Range, helps a camera capture details across both bright and dark parts of a scene. With 16-bit processing, the sensor can work with a larger amount of image data.

Samsung says this can help produce cleaner images with less noise, particularly when taking photos in difficult lighting.

This could be useful for photography at night, indoors, during sunsets, or in scenes where there is a big difference between light and shadow.

Better HDR While Zooming

Another important feature of the ISOCELL HPC is its ability to maintain HDR quality across different in-sensor zoom levels.

The sensor supports HDR at 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x zoom.

This means users should be able to switch between different zoom levels while maintaining more consistent HDR performance.

Samsung is also using a new lens and light-guiding system with the sensor. This system is designed to direct more light toward each pixel, which can further improve the sensor’s ability to capture images in different lighting conditions.

4K Video at 180fps

Samsung has also improved the video capabilities of the new sensor.

The ISOCELL HPC can record 4K video at up to 180 frames per second. This is a significant feature for slow-motion video because recording at a higher frame rate allows footage to be slowed down while remaining smooth.

Smartphones equipped with the sensor could therefore offer smoother slow-motion recording at 4K resolution.

What This Means for Smartphone Cameras

The ISOCELL HPC brings several improvements together in one sensor. Its 200MP resolution, DeepPix technology, 16-bit HDR, improved light collection, multiple HDR zoom levels, and 4K 180fps video support are designed to improve both photography and video recording.

The biggest benefits could be seen in situations where smartphone cameras normally struggle, such as nighttime photography, scenes with strong sunlight and shadows, and zoomed-in shots.

Samsung says the new ISOCELL HPC is expected to appear in smartphones launching later this year. The actual image quality will depend on how smartphone manufacturers use the sensor along with their camera lenses, image-processing software, and other hardware.
