PTA Begins Blocking Social Media Content and Apps with New Web Monitoring System

0

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a crackdown on online content through its newly implemented Web Monitoring System (WMS). In a written statement to the National Assembly, the Minister in charge of the Cabinet Division revealed that the WMS has already blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile apps that were involved in exposing personal data and identity information. Additionally, the PTA has begun blocking social media accounts and other online entities through WMS that allegedly spread propaganda against state institutions and the country’s national interests.

Advanced Technology in Internet Monitoring
The WMS utilizes advanced technology to monitor and control internet traffic across Pakistan. Acquired from a Canadian company in 2019 for approximately $18 million, this system enables the PTA to execute large-scale blocking and censorship of online content. Beyond blocking content, the telecom regulator is also focused on public education, running awareness campaigns to inform citizens about safe internet practices.

E-Portal System for Government Organizations
The PTA has also developed an online E-Portal system that allows government organizations to report issues related to online content swiftly. According to sources, a total of 47 organizations are currently using this platform to track and manage their complaints. This system ensures that issues are addressed efficiently and effectively.

Complaint Management System for the Public
For the general public, the PTA has introduced a user-friendly Complaint Management System (CMS) to report any unlawful content. Accessible through the PTA’s website, mobile app, and a dedicated email service, the CMS allows individuals to lodge complaints about inappropriate or illegal content. Once a complaint is submitted, the PTA collaborates with hosting platforms such as the Apple Store and Google Play Store to remove or block the content within the country.
