Malaysia Lauds Pakistan’s Efforts in Bridging Digital Divide

ISLAMABAD – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has commended Pakistan’s Universal Service Fund (USF) for its significant strides in connecting the unconnected and empowering rural communities through digital access. A high-level delegation from MCMC, including representatives from various tech companies, visited the USF Head Office in Islamabad on February 19, 2025, to exchange ideas and best practices.
USF CEO, Ch. Mudassar Naveed, highlighted the organization’s achievements in expanding digital connectivity across Pakistan. He emphasized that USF has initiated 161 projects, subsidized to the tune of PKR 136 billion, leading to the installation of over 4,000 telecom sites and providing high-speed internet to 21,500 previously unserved areas, impacting over 37 million people.

“USF is playing a crucial role in bridging the digital divide between urban and rural communities,” stated Naveed, adding that “by providing mobile broadband services to underserved areas, we are ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the digital economy.”

The Malaysian delegation, led by Ms. Malini Ramalingam, Head of MCMC Academy, expressed admiration for USF’s progress. Mr. Wan Khairil Reza Bin Wan Kamaludin, Head of Universal Service Provision (USP) in Malaysia, shared insights into Malaysia’s similar initiative, which has led to the installation of 1099 internet centers and 1661 4G towers.
Both countries emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving digital inclusion and driving 5G deployment. The Malaysian delegation also participated in a seminar organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on “Regulatory Masterclass 5G and Beyond: Shaping the Future of Connectivity,” focusing on the regulatory challenges and opportunities associated with 5G technology.

This visit signifies growing collaboration between Pakistan and Malaysia in the realm of digital development, with both countries committed to leveraging technology for socio-economic growth and empowering their citizens
