Brazil Reignite Interest in Carlo Ancelotti for 2026 World Cup Amid Dorival Jr’s Struggles

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has reportedly revived its pursuit of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti to lead the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The renewed interest comes in the wake of Brazil’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers, which has intensified pressure on current head coach Dorival Junior.

Ancelotti was previously linked to the Brazil job in 2023, but he chose to remain with Real Madrid, signing a contract extension until 2026. Despite this, fresh reports indicate that CBF officials have resumed discussions, aiming to bring the Italian tactician on board as concerns mount over the team’s inconsistent performances.

Former Brazilian star Ronaldo Nazário revealed that Ancelotti was close to accepting the role last year but was ultimately retained by Madrid.

“I was involved in the negotiations and spoke to Carlo. However, Real Madrid didn’t release him,” Ronaldo shared in an interview with Charla Podcast. “Had he not won anything, Madrid might have let him go, and he would have joined Brazil.”

CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues had initially assured fans that Ancelotti would take charge after his Madrid tenure, but that plan fell through. The federation subsequently appointed Fernando Diniz as interim coach before giving Dorival Junior the permanent position.

Brazil currently sits fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying standings, trailing leaders Argentina by eight points. With four qualifiers remaining, the team remains six points clear of seventh-placed Venezuela, the position that faces an intercontinental play-off. However, the squad’s recent struggles have reignited calls for a leadership change.

Ancelotti remains under contract with Real Madrid, but speculation about his future continues, particularly as Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso emerges as a strong candidate to succeed him at the Bernabéu. Whether the seasoned Italian coach will make the leap to international football remains uncertain, but Brazil’s determination to secure his services shows no sign of waning.
