Web desk 08/08/2025: WASHINGTON, D.C. – A global Sikh referendum for an independent state of Khalistan is set to take place in Washington, D.C. on August 17. The event, organized by the Sikh community, aims to bring international attention to the long-standing demand for an independent homeland in Punjab.

Thousands of Sikhs from around the world are expected to gather to cast their votes. Organizers state that the referendum is both a symbolic act and a protest against what they describe as a history of atrocities committed by the Indian government. The movement seeks to establish Punjab as an independent state named “Khalistan,” reflecting the community’s desire for a separate state where they feel their religious and cultural rights would be protected. The referendum also honors those who have died in the cause for Khalistan.

Preparations for the event are in full swing across the United States. According to organizers, special booths and information camps have been set up in gurdwaras to inform worshippers about the significance of the vote. Volunteers are also conducting door-to-door campaigns, urging people to travel to Washington, D.C. on August 17 to participate. Organizers anticipate a massive turnout, claiming that millions of Sikhs will participate to strengthen their voice and inject new momentum into the Khalistan movement.

The choice of Washington, D.C. as the venue is strategic, intended to maximize exposure to international media and governments. While the results of the referendum may not be legally binding under international law, it is seen by the Sikh community as a powerful demonstration of their unity and the depth of their commitment to the cause.

A flyer promoting the event, which features a ballot box with an American flag design, outlines the voting eligibility requirements. To receive a ballot, individuals must be a Sikh living in America, be 18 years or older as of August 17, 2025, and provide a valid form of identification. Acceptable IDs include American IDs, various Indian documents such as Aadhaar or voter ID cards, or any other form of identity document. The flyer states that no identity documents will be copied or recorded.
