Islamabad: PTCL–Ufone management has formally confirmed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and other relevant government institutions have granted final regulatory approvals for the acquisition of Telenor Pakistan by PTCL–Ufone Group.
With all regulatory requirements now completed, Telenor Pakistan will officially become part of the PTCL–Ufone Group from January 1, 2026, marking one of the largest consolidation moves in Pakistan’s telecom sector.
According to official sources, PTCL has not only acquired Telenor Pakistan’s mobile operations but has also taken over four additional associated companies, including their network infrastructure and operational assets, as part of the broader transaction.
Following the completion of this deal, Telenor Group’s presence in Pakistan will be limited to Easypaisa, its digital financial services arm. Sources indicate that discussions regarding a potential sale or strategic partnership of Easypaisa are ongoing, though no final decision has yet been announced.
Industry insiders further revealed that PTCL Pakistan and Etisalat, which holds a majority ownership stake in PTCL–Ufone, are expected to formally announce the acquisition after January 1, 2026.
In terms of market size, Telenor Pakistan currently serves approximately 45 million subscribers, while Ufone has around 24 million users. The merger will create a combined customer base of nearly 70 million subscribers, positioning PTCL–Ufone Group among the largest telecom operators in the country.
Telecom experts believe the consolidation will lead to enhanced network coverage, improved data speeds, accelerated rollout of 5G services, and increased investment in fibre infrastructure. Consumers are also expected to benefit from better service quality, expanded digital offerings, and more competitive pricing.
Analysts view the acquisition as a transformational development for Pakistan’s telecom and digital ecosystem, reshaping market dynamics and strengthening the country’s long-term connectivity and digital growth agenda.
