Arizona State University (ASU) has introduced a new bachelor’s degree specially designed for students who want to become professional content creators, influencers, and digital media experts.
The new Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation will be offered through ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program is included in the university’s 2026–2027 academic catalog and requires students to complete at least 120 credit hours.
The degree was officially approved by the university’s Senate in March 2026. According to the university, the program will prepare students for careers in content creation across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, podcasts, livestreams, blogs, and other digital media.
One of the most unique parts of this degree is that students will not only learn about social media but will also have to build a real online presence.
For their final project, students must choose a platform such as TikTok, create a complete content strategy, regularly publish videos or other content, and work on growing a real audience during the semester. Their success will be measured by actual audience growth, engagement, and followers.
Jessica Pucci, Senior Associate Dean at the Cronkite School, said students are expected to complete the program with an active social media account, real followers, and practical experience that they can use when applying for jobs or working as independent creators.
The university says the course is designed to teach much more than simply making videos. Students will learn how to understand social media algorithms, study audience behavior, analyze performance, improve engagement, and build long-term digital brands.
The degree includes several practical courses such as How to Become an Influencer, On-Camera Presence, Introduction to Video Editing, Videography, Podcasting and Audio Storytelling, Social Media Foundations, and The Digital Audience.
Along with these creative subjects, students will also study important topics like media law, journalism ethics, communication skills, media writing, and information gathering. They will also complete general education courses such as mathematics and history.
ASU will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities in both Phoenix and Los Angeles. Students can participate in the Los Angeles Content Creation Studio, work on real brand campaigns, complete media internships, and gain practical industry experience.
According to the university, graduates of this program can build careers as digital influencers, content creators, podcasters, videographers, photographers, social media managers, digital marketers, brand storytellers, and multimedia producers.
The launch of this new degree shows that universities are now recognizing content creation as a serious profession. Instead of treating social media as just a hobby, ASU aims to teach students the business, creative, and technical skills needed to build successful careers in the fast-growing digital content industry.
