Google has announced that Chrome on Android is now much smoother to use, with 48% fewer scrolling interruptions compared to late 2023. The improvement comes after nearly three years of engineering work to make web browsing faster and more responsive.
The company said it focused on solving a problem known as “scroll jank.” This happens when a webpage does not move smoothly while you scroll. Instead of following your finger instantly, the page may briefly freeze, stutter, or lag for a fraction of a second. Even though the delay is very small, it can make browsing feel less smooth and less responsive.
According to Google, fixing this problem was not as simple as making Chrome faster. Chrome has a more complex design than most Android apps because it separates different tasks into multiple processes. This improves security, stability, and performance, but it also creates more chances for small delays to happen while loading and displaying web pages.
To solve the issue, Google first spent several months studying how Chrome worked during scrolling. Engineers added special monitoring tools to the browser to track exactly where delays occurred. This allowed them to identify the parts of Chrome that were slowing down the scrolling experience.
After finding the causes, Google made several important improvements to Chrome’s internal system over the next few years.
One of the biggest changes was improving the way Chrome handles touch input. When users swipe their fingers across the screen, those touch commands now follow a much faster processing path. This allows Chrome to react more quickly to every movement.
Google also improved communication between Chrome’s different processes. Since the browser splits its work into separate parts, data has to move between them constantly. By reducing delays in this communication, Chrome can display web pages much faster and more smoothly.
Another major improvement involved using the phone’s graphics processing unit (GPU) more effectively. More rendering work is now handled by the GPU instead of relying mainly on the processor. This helps Chrome create smoother animations and display web pages more consistently while users scroll.
Google also worked closely with the Android development team to improve the operating system itself. Android now gives higher priority to touch-related tasks, allowing user input to reach Chrome faster. As a result, the browser can respond more quickly and display each frame on time, making scrolling feel much more natural.
Thanks to all of these improvements, Google says scrolling interruptions in Chrome on Android have been reduced by almost 50 percent since 2023.
Users may especially notice the difference when reading long articles, browsing news websites, shopping online, or scrolling through social media pages in Chrome. Pages should now move more smoothly with fewer sudden pauses, stutters, or delays.
