ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Weather Forecasting Centre has issued a weather alert predicting torrential rains for Sindh and parts of Balochistan from August 19 to August 22, 2025.
According to the Met office, strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are consistently entering the country, particularly the southern regions.
Forecast Breakdown:
* Sindh: Widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms are expected with scattered heavy to very heavy falls in cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, and Mirpurkhas. Other areas affected include Mithi, Tharparker, Umer Kot, Shaheed Benazirabad, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar, and Jamshoro. Scattered rainfall is also expected in Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, and Jacobabad during this period.
* Balochistan: Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with scattered heavy falls are anticipated in Barkhan, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, Gawadar, and Panjgur.
* Other Regions: Subdued rain, wind, and thunderstorms are also expected at isolated places in Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Punjab, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa from August 19 to August 22.
Potential Impacts and Safety Advisories:
The torrential rains could cause urban flooding in the low-lying areas of Sindh, including Karachi, Thatta, Badin, and Hyderabad. There is also a risk of flash floods in the streams and rivers of north and southeastern Balochistan.
The heavy rainfall, windstorms, and lightning may damage vulnerable structures such as the roofs and walls of mud houses, as well as electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.
The public, travelers, and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to vulnerable areas. All concerned authorities have been advised to remain on “ALERT” and take the necessary precautions to prevent any negative situations.
