Shaza Fatima Defends Telecom Bill

Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has said that the government is carefully reviewing concerns about the Telecom Reorganization Amendment Bill while continuing efforts to improve Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament, Shaza Fatima said the bill was presented before the Senate Standing Committee through the proper democratic process. She rejected claims that the government was trying to pass the bill quickly without discussion.

According to the minister, the bill remained under discussion in the National Assembly for nearly six months. During this period, lawmakers had enough time to study the proposed changes and share their opinions.

Shaza Fatima said the legislation is important for the future of Pakistan’s telecom sector, especially as the country prepares for the launch of 5G services. She explained that after the 5G spectrum auction, telecom companies will need to expand fiber-optic networks across the country. Strong fiber infrastructure is necessary to provide faster internet speeds and better network performance.

The minister said the government has two important responsibilities. The first is to protect the property rights of citizens, and the second is to ensure that modern digital services reach people in every part of the country. She added that expanding fiber-optic connectivity is essential for Pakistan’s digital growth and inclusion.

She also revealed that a special committee led by the Law Minister is reviewing objections raised about the bill. The committee is examining different concerns and identifying areas where changes or clarifications may be needed. Its recommendations will be submitted to the Prime Minister for further review.

According to Shaza Fatima, some concerns are related to the legal and technical wording of the bill. She assured stakeholders that the government is willing to address these issues and improve the draft where necessary. She said the government welcomes constructive feedback and wants to make the legislation clearer and more effective.

The Telecom Reorganization Amendment Bill has sparked debate because of its potential impact on Pakistan’s telecom sector and future digital development. Supporters believe it will help speed up infrastructure expansion and support new technologies such as 5G. Critics, however, have called for stronger protections and clearer language in certain sections of the bill.

As Pakistan moves toward a more digital future, the government is trying to balance technological progress with the protection of citizens’ rights. The recommendations of the review committee and the Prime Minister’s decision will play an important role in shaping the final version of the telecom reforms.
