In a recent discussion on a private television channel, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Misbah-ul-Haq, drew an intriguing parallel between current national wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan and India’s legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, MS Dhoni. Misbah praised Rizwan’s captaincy skills, specifically highlighting his ability to utilize part-time bowlers effectively, a trait reminiscent of Dhoni’s captaincy tactics. Misbah stated, “At times, MS Dhoni used to utilize his part-time bowlers way better than others utilizing their regular bowlers. The way Rizwan used Khushdil Shah in the previous PSL, I can sense the same quality in him.” The positive remarks came in light of Multan Sultans’ impressive performance under Rizwan’s leadership in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 9).
Mohammad Rizwan, a right-handed top-order batter, took on the captaincy role during a challenging period for Pakistan cricket when three key players were embroiled in a spot-fixing scandal in the United Kingdom. Misbah himself led the team in the aftermath of the 2010 incident, guiding Pakistan to the Test mace in 2016.
Rizwan’s leadership journey saw him sidelined after Babar Azam relinquished the national captaincy in 2023. Despite calls for Rizwan to take on the white-ball captaincy, it was Shaheen Shah Afridi who was appointed as the T20I leader.
Following Pakistan’s disappointing T20I series loss against New Zealand in January 2024 under Afridi’s captaincy, several former cricketers and experts have advocated for Rizwan to assume the white-ball captaincy role. The comparisons to MS Dhoni further underscore the recognition of Rizwan’s strategic acumen and captaincy potential.
As discussions around the leadership of the Pakistan cricket team continue, the positive remarks from Misbah-ul-Haq highlight the growing support for Mohammad Rizwan to play a more prominent role in steering the team’s fortunes, especially in limited-overs cricket.
